Logic Pro X – Basic ‘Effects Chain’

A single channel strip can contain several signal processing plugins (filters) that are processed top to bottom through the channel strip.

Clicking into an empty slot on the plugins segment opens a selection menu where all installed plugins are listed by category, then further down the list by vendor, eg. Native Instruments, Wave etc..

Clicking onto the plugin it self opens the related control panel. In the upper left corner the plugins can be ‘mute’ or bypassed, in order to hear before / after, or to disable it without removing it from the chain.

In analog consoles from the past, effects lived externally in a rack, which even in the digital world still happens for vintage equipment, specialist equipment that would require too much processing power etc.. In this case the signal can be branched out via a Send(BUS) and returned via AUX into the signal chain.

The above picture is a typical layout consisting of,

  1. Compressor
  2. Equalizer
  3. DeEsser

Further the compressor is setup in ‘side chain’ mode, with the additional green signal path to a bus – more about this later.

After the signal passes through all the effects, it is summed to the Master bus (violet) before traveling to the sound output.

All parameters can be automated, which includes all adjustment within the plugins, muting / unmuting effects, fader portions etc..
